Participant recruitment for the #AI-Stethoscope_Study officially commenced in Ndola, with Zambart’s outreach team taking the study directly into communities to engage potential participants.

Recruitment began last week in Mushili Community, with the outreach team setting up at Mushili Market- a central meeting point where community members shop, work and interact.

Taking research activities into the heart of the community is an important part of the study’s approach, creating opportunities for residents to learn more about tuberculosis (TB) screening and the technology being evaluated, while also making participation more accessible.

The study is evaluating the #Ostium _Digital _Stethoscope, a wireless device that records high-quality lung and heart sounds. The recordings are analysed using AID.TB, an artificial intelligence (AI) model trained to recognise lung sounds using data from thousands of patients with confirmed tuberculosis.

The AI-Stethoscope Study aims to assess the clinical performance of this AI-interpreted digital stethoscope as a screening tool for TB in high-burden settings. By evaluating how this technology performs in real-world community settings, the study seeks to explore whether AI-assisted digital stethoscopy could contribute to more accessible and earlier TB detection.

The Six months study is led by Dr.Theresa Muzyamba-Kaulule the Zambian Principal Investigator, and @Maria Ruperez, the Overall Principal Investigator, who are working with the study team and community partners to support the successful implementation of the research in Zambia.

For communities such as Mushili, where people can face barriers to accessing health services, bringing research activities closer to where people live and work provides an opportunity to connect communities with innovative approaches to disease screening.
