The University of Zambia Teaching Hospital Respiratory Unit delivered a four-part presentation at Zambart titled “Beyond TB Cure: Building a Research Agenda for Post-Tuberculosis Lung Disease in Zambia” during a Research Directorate meeting. The presentation highlighted the need to look beyond tuberculosis treatment success and focus on the long-term respiratory health challenges that may continue after patients are declared cured.
Post-tuberculosis lung disease is an important public health concern, particularly in settings where TB remains a major burden. The discussion emphasized the importance of building a focused research agenda in Zambia to better understand the scale of the problem, identify affected populations, and strengthen care for people living with long-term lung complications after TB treatment.
Presenters included Dr. Chipo Sarah Chabauni, an Internal Medicine physician from Levy Mwanawasa University Teaching Hospital; Dr. Rodgers Ng’ombe Nedson, a psychiatry registrar at UTH; Dr. Chisha Sinyangwe from the Internal Medicine and Infectious Disease Department at UTH; and Dr. Mukubaa Mukuba, an Internal Medicine and Infectious diseases registrar at UTH.
The meeting underscored the need for Zambia to generate local evidence on post-tuberculosis lung disease and to translate that evidence into improved patient care.
The Respiratory Unit is headed by Dr. Kondwelani Mateyo, a CREATE PhD Fellow based at Zambart.
